about

The Sun is a collaborative project between new media artist Zi-Ping TIAN and composer William KUO incorporating laser, dance, and electronic music. The 35-minute long electronic composition is in 3rd-order ambisonics, conceived specifically for playback through 8 loudspeakers and 1 subwoofer inside the DOME, a 12-metre (diameter) by 6-metre (height) dome structure built by the Technology Media Platform at C-LAB through the FUTURE VISION LAB project. This binaural recording was captured using an ambisonic microphone placed inside the DOME. Headphones are recommended for the best listening experience.

Program Note by Zi-Ping TIAN:

The Sun is a collaboration between new-media artist TIAN Zi-Ping and composer William KUO. This piece builds upon TIAN’s work for the National Taichung Theater - Lab X The Young Artists’ Atelier in 2020. It traces the tacit relationship between technology and humanity. People are more trusting and relying more on the operation and assistance of machines nowadays. Therefore, contemporary technological art embodies a tenderness that originates from the physical senses and is based on human reasoning.

This artwork coordinates the momentum of circular laser beams and machines to penetrate dancing bodies. The space within a semi-circle creates a surround sound field that resonates with the audience, as dancers act as physical instruments to transcend the space. This new-media dance performance attempts to build a “relationship” through untouchable visuals and interactions. The intention is to verify the dance and coexistence of machines and physical bodies, which might fundamentally be formed by asymmetrical communication.
